A Message from Dean Whiting

It is with tremendous sadness that I share with you the tragic news that rising junior, Vivian Ziwei Guan was killed on July 22nd when she was hit by a Metro train while crossing the Houston Metro tracks with her bicycle. Please join us in pausing to remember an extraordinary young woman who brought the school so much vivacious energy and enthusiasm. There are simply no words to express the tragedy of this accident. Our hearts go out to her family in New Zealand.

--Dean Sarah Whiting

Information about Vivian's memorial:

Scott Ziegler's office is organizing a lunchtime vigil for Vivian Friday, July 25th at noon at the site of her death: the intersection of Walker and Main. Please join if you are able.

Pastors Justin Rose and Chris Parrett, from Vivian's church, the Canvas Community Church, will hold a memorial service for Vivian that evening at 6:30 in Rice Memorial Chapel. We will host a reception afterwards in the Farnsworth Pavilion in the Rice Memorial Center. Please join all of us. Vivian's parents are arriving from Auckland this afternoon; I do not know whether or not they will be able to attend the memorial. Parking will be free in the garage beneath McNair Hall (the Jones School).

Architecture will work with Sid Rich to hold a memorial for Vivian once the semester begins and everyone has returned to campus.
