The interior of this Aesop store in Culver City, and conceived in collaboration with Johnston Marklee architects, is based on a rectangular plan that gradually expands in section. Structured in three tiers, the space is fully wrapped with a wallpaper, silk-screened in four colors, including translucent white, metallic bronze, and two shades of brown. The custom-designed, two-dimensional graphic pattern—not unlike the frescoes of Renaissance churches in Italy—is defining the character of the otherwise generic space of a typical suburban shopping mall. It is modulated so as to affect the spatial perception of the compact interior.
