PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
RSAP was founded in September 2002 with a mission to provide "Study Abroad" opportunities for current RSA upper-level graduate and Fifth-Year Bachelor of Architecture Program students. The selected students are housed in rented furnished apartments, located in close proximity to RSAP. In addition to an advanced design studio on urban issues, students are given lectures and seminars on History, Theory, Technology, Materials and Methods. An intense documentary film-making course is also part of the curriculum, as are French language and culture instruction. A weeklong organized travel tour to other cities in France and Europe is an integral component of the program. Students receive 16 hours credit equivalent to a normal semester at RSA in Houston. Rice faculty participates in the instruction of these courses augmented by many leading European practitioners, historians, and theoreticians. Assistant Director Garry White is responsible for the day-to-day management of RSAP, overseen by Director John J. Casbarian.

LOCATION:
Located near the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, noted for its design boutiques and galleries, RSAP is close to the Bastille Opera, Gare de Lyon and Place des Vosges. The 1,400 square foot space accommodates the teaching programs as well as public exhibits, colloquia, and lectures. Equipped with high-speed internet access and other electronic media devices, RSAP provides students with all necessary facilities and tools to produce work of the highest caliber. RSAP is the only Rice University satellite campus.

SELECTION PROCESS:
For the first time RSAP is now open to a limited number of outstanding students in other other accredited architecture programs. Limited to a total of 10 students, and open only to those who are entering their Fifth Year for undergraduates, or penultimate year for graduates, eligible students apply during the prior spring semester for both the following fall and spring semesters. Selections are made, by a faculty committee, before the end of that semester and are based on a variety of factors, including motivation, ability for independent work, balance and parity between undergraduates and graduates.

APPLICANTS WHO ARE NOT RSA STUDENTS:
Please download this pdf which includes application instructions, an application form and a recommendation form, and return the completed materials to the RSA by March 10, 2012. To download a poster about the program as it applies to external students, please click here.
