The Rice University School of Architecture will posthumously bestow the 2024 Dean’s Medal to Raymond Brochstein B.A. ’55, B.S. ’56 (1932–2022). Initiated in 2023, the Dean’s Medal is given annually in recognition of extraordinary dedication, leadership, and support for the School of Architecture and its pursuit of excellence in design education across the spectrum of practice, research, and teaching.

Associate Professor Troy Schaum and Assistant Professor Maggie Tsang are the inaugural recipients of the Rice Architecture Research Fellowship (ARF). This fellowship, funded by the Office of Research and debuting with the 2024–25 academic year, provides a $30,000 research grant and teaching leave, giving faculty the time and space to focus on major scholarly projects.

Rice University is refocusing its efforts on the Center for Environmental Studies (CES) to enhance and advance the center’s research goals and initiatives regarding environmental issues in our society.

Recent graduate Melvalean McLemore-Catina, M.S. ’23, has been awarded a 2024 AIA Young Architects Award, an honor recognizing AIA members who are exceptional leaders as well as in the early stages of their architectural careers.

Edited by Assistant Professor Brittany Utting, Architectures of Care: From the Intimate to the Common (Routledge, 2024) explores how spaces of care shape our affective, material, and social forms—from the most intimate scale of the body to our planetary commons.

Congratulations to Luke Bulman, M.Arch. ’98, founder of the Office of Luke Bulman and lecturer at the Yale School of Architecture, who recently developed the new brand identity for the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture.

Igor Marjanović, William Ward Watkin Dean of the Rice University School of Architecture, served as guest editor of the fifth issue of AR/Architecture Research: Dialectics of Pedagogy.

In the recent Iceland beer spa architecture competition organized by Buildner, graduate students Nathan Ehrlich, Alexandro Piña, and Yao Xiao, all M.Arch. ’26 candidates from Rice University School of Architecture, emerged as winners of the student award.
