Visiting the campus
Rice’s 300-acre campus is a shade-filled arboretum, renowned for its low, horizontal canopy of live oaks. From the university’s first building, Lovett Hall, designed by Ralph Adams Cram at the very beginning of the twentieth century to the addition of the Moody Center for the Arts, designed by Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan, the campus is home to a rich variety of spaces, indoor and out.

Walk-in visitors to the school are welcome from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visitors with extra time should take advantage of the university’s public art and exhibition spaces. A full list and campus art map can be found here. We recommend taking time to visit Houston’s nearby Museum District, home to the Menil Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, among others.

If you’re a prospective student, let us show you around! Tours of the school can be arranged by emailing arch@rice.edu (for undergraduate applicants) or Kristina Kennedy (for graduate applicants). We host many lectures and events throughout the year, so consider pairing your tour with events going on in the school or at the university. More visitors and admissions can be found here.

Accessibility Access to MD Anderson Hall

Building Access
There is active construction surrounding MD Anderson Hall, so please use this information to make getting to our building easier. A wheelchair-accessible entrance to the building is marked with signage from either side of Loop Road. Please note that the entrance to MD Anderson Hall closest to Loop Road has a ramp but it is not ADA compliant. Please refer to the map for assistance.

Accessing MD Anderson Hall from Loop Road
Use the ramp across from Keck Hall to cross the street and enter the sidewalk next to the Cannady Hall construction site. Follow the signage to go through the Smith Courtyard and around the corner to enter the building using the wheelchair-accessible ramp on the east side of MD Anderson Anderson Hall (facing the academic quadrangle). There is signage to mark this path.

Accessing MD Anderson Hall from the Fondren Library Arcade
Use the ramp between the Humanities Building and Rayzor Hall. Follow the sidewalk, pass under the Fondren Library arcade, and use the plywood path to approach MD Anderson Hall. Use the wheelchair ramp leading directly into the building.

Bathroom Access
MD Anderson has both men’s and women’s accessible bathrooms. The men’s bathroom is on the second floor, accessible using the elevator. The women’s bathroom is on the first floor.

We are happy to help with additional assistance or accommodations. Email Carla Haskins, director of inclusion and strategic initiatives, at carlah@rice.edu, or call her at 713-348-2265.

Visiting the campus

Rice Architecture Paris is the university’s only satellite facility. Located in the 12th arrondissement near the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, noted for its design boutiques and galleries, we are close to the Bastille Opera, Gare de Lyon and Place des Vosges. In addition to classes—studio, history, theory, and French language lessons—the 1,500-square foot space accommodates exhibits, colloquia, and lectures.

The Paris program, which includes travel visits across Europe, complements our Houston location: these two major cities could not be more different, but both offer insights into architecture’s global impact. If you are interested in visiting our Paris design studio, please contact our Director of External Programs, Professor John Casbarian at jjc@rice.edu.
