This course focuses on the act of drawing as an architectural interface for the act of making. We will examine the role of notation relative to analog and computational approaches within the design-to-fabrication and construction processes. In particular, we will look at 1:1 drawing, its connection to historical and contemporary architectural discourse, its appearance and applications in contemporary construction: shop drawings, construction layouts, templates, marking jigs, scripts, overlays, etc. In the process, we will also explore relevant concepts from the domain of computational literacy, human-machine interaction, and augmented fabrication.

This seminar takes a research-through-making approach, testing methods through hands-on practice. The project work in this seminar will be framed by key texts and discussion on architecture’s engagement with craft, labor, material intelligence, circular economy, hardware and software.
