Associate Professor in Architectural Design (with tenure)

The Rice University School of Architecture invites applications and nominations for a faculty appointment in architectural design at the rank of associate professor (with tenure). The successful candidate will demonstrate a distinguished body of creative and scholarly work, an exemplary record of design teaching, and a clear commitment to service. They will bring a timely disciplinary perspective, with an established and notable line of inquiry that will contribute to the collective conversation of the faculty and the advancement of the field of architecture more broadly. The school welcomes and promotes the productive interrelationship of design practice and scholarship and provides a rich intellectual environment and resources, including new space for exhibitions, fabrication, and faculty research with the recent addition of Cannady Hall. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding design studio faculty colleague who can teach across our undergraduate and graduate programs while also offering lecture courses and seminars in their area of research. We are particularly interested in historically underrepresented voices and welcome applicants whose work and lived experiences will expand our conversations, perspectives, and practices. 

As the fourth-largest and most diverse city in the United States, Houston reflects the most pressing challenges worldwide and is an exciting laboratory for new forms of urban thought and design agency. The Rice School of Architecture draws upon this unique context and Houston’s immense arts, culture, and industry, offering opportunities for both local and global engagement. 

This position is available beginning fall 2025. Applicants should hold, at a minimum, a master of architecture degree or its equivalent; additional qualifications may include professional licensure or an advanced research degree. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to design and creative practice and have exemplary teaching and professional experience, including a portfolio of inspiring and field-defining design work. Review of applications will begin on December 31, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
