As a project engineer for SOM since 2007, Benton Johnson has worked on several large scale projects around the globe, including the Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Recently, Johnson has served as project engineer on the Timber Tower Research Project, helping to develop the innovative structural system proposed: the “concrete jointed timber frame,” which could reduce the embodied carbon footprint of tall building structures by 60-75%. Mr. Johnson’s background and experience in tall and supertall buildings was especially useful in developing an efficient mass-timber system for tall buildings that can compete with reinforced concrete and structural steel buildings.
