Larry Albert has taught site planning and landscape at Rice Architecture since 2001. A registered architect in the state of Texas since 2002, he has designed and overseen projects for Murphy Mears Architects, Gensler, Morris Gutierrez Architects, and on his own in private practice. His ongoing research on Houston, which began with his graduate thesis, Houston Wet, chronicles specific aspects of the city's unique landscape, history, and culture that have allowed it to serve as a laboratory for the invention and promotion of building types and environments divorced from their actual locations. He is also the founder of the popular and award-wining news website Swamplot.com, which covers Houston's real-estate landscape.
Larry is a former member of the editorial board of the Rice Design Alliance Cite's magazine, for which he also served as a writer and issue editor. His criticism has also appeared in Architecture magazine and the Boston Phoenix. His photo essays have appeared in 2 Fotofest exhibitions, the arc en rêve centre d'architecture in Bordeaux, Cite, the Houston Chronicle, and several books. Larry has also taught non-fiction writing to high-school students in a summer program for Wonderworks at the University of Houston. He has served as a guest lecturer and critic at the University of Houston's Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, and in that school's Summer Discovery program. Prior to becoming an architect, Larry worked as a writer and editor for several publications and organizations, including the Boston Phoenix, Earthwatch, Computerworld, and Mercer Management Consulting.
