Located along the Houston Ship Channel, Galena Park offers a critical lens on the future of Gulf Coast communities, where industrial activity, environmental conditions, infrastructure, mobility, public space, and community identity intersect in everyday life. Gulf Coast Futures: Galena Park asks how these forces can be understood alongside the knowledge, histories, and aspirations of the people who call Galena Park home, and how that knowledge can help shape more equitable and resilient futures.
As part of Rice University’s participation in the National Academies Gulf Futures Program, students conducted research on Galena Park and the Gulf Coast through mapping, observation, archival research, and direct engagement with residents and community organizations. The Rice Civic Forum brings together students, residents, community leaders, faculty, and the broader Houston community. Through research exhibits, conversations, and prompts, participants will consider a central question: What future do you imagine for Galena Park?

About the Rice Civic Forum
Launched in 1973, the Rice Civic Forum brings together architects, designers, scholars, policymakers, students, and community members to explore the civic dimensions of architecture and urban design. Each year, the forum focuses on a specific neighborhood, site, or theme in Houston, using the city’s unique conditions as a lens to engage broader conversations about equity, resilience, and the public realm. Through on-site dialogue and public programs, the forum seeks to amplify local voices, share diverse perspectives, and imagine new possibilities for the city’s future.
