Tania Leonor Gutiérrez Monroy, scholar-in-residence (Emerging Scholar Fellow), Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design at the University of Houston, presents the workshop "Landscapes of Resistance: Architectural Practices of Indigenous Communities in Mexico" at 12:00 p.m. as part of the Rice Architecture Society Event Series.
Tania Gutiérrez-Monroy is an architectural historian who holds a Ph.D. in architecture from McGill University and is currently the Scholar-in-Residence (Emerging Scholar Fellow) at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, at the University of Houston. Her research interests include spatial negotiations of identity, ephemeral architectures during conflict, and landscapes of Indigenous resistance. Gutiérrez-Monroy received an Honors Bachelor of Architecture from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and a post-professional Master from McGill University. She has practiced as an architect in Mexico and has taught architectural history, theory, design, and research methods at the University of Houston, the University of British Columbia, Louisiana State University, and Université Laval.
Construction of physical structures is inseparable from the construction of human identities. Rice Architecture aims to broaden our understanding of building construction and identity formation as two interrelated processes, seeking to close the gap between the social and the formal in the field of architecture and our world more broadly. Reflecting the pluralism of Houston as the most diverse city in the United States, Building Identities advances the agency of architecture in a new multicultural world. We believe this is an urgent theme for our school, our community, and our field at large.
