Troy Schaum, Associate Professor at the Rice School of Architecture and principal at Schaum Architects (formerly Schaum/Shieh), was quoted in The New York Times story titled “The Quest to Preserve Donald Judd’s Marfa”. The article highlights the ongoing restoration of Donald Judd’s Architecture Office in Marfa, Texas, which Troy and his firm are leading in collaboration with the Judd Foundation.

In the piece, Schaum discusses how the restoration process carefully melds Donald Judd’s original design interventions with sustainable and contextual building practices. He emphasizes that the project was built "brick by brick" while re‑examining the building holistically within Marfa’s historic urban fabric.

The restoration—part of the broader Judd Foundation Marfa Restoration Plan—is set to open to the public in September 2025, with a grand opening scheduled for September 20, 2025, including a day‑long open house and community celebration.

Troy and Schaum Architects also played a pivotal role in restoring Judd’s John Chamberlain Building, which the Chinati Foundation reopened in 2022, gaining attention for its sensitive repair of adobe walls, skylights, windows, and the original “as found” aesthetic.
