Aylin Nazli, M.Arch. student and host of Rice Architecture's podcast Tête-à-Tête, spoke with Troy Schaum and Nat Oppenheimer about what makes the Totalization program unique, how it fits into the curriculum at Rice Architecture, and the importance of collaborations between the students and professional consultants. Troy Schaum is an associate professor at Rice Architecture, where he was the 2008-2010 Wortham Fellow. He is also a partner at SCHAUM/SHIEH, where his design and research interests focus on new possibilities for form, representation, and politics in the post-megalopolitan city. Troy has extensive experience building at a range of scales; prior to his position at Rice and founding SCHAUM/SHIEH, he was a project architect at OMA New York responsible for the design of Cornell's Paul Milstein Hall. SCHAUM/SHIEH's Transart Foundation in Houston, Texas recently won The Architect's Newspaper 2018 Best of Design Award for Cultural Building of the Year. He holds a Masters of Architecture from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech University. Troy is currently the coordinator of the Totalization sequence.

Nat Oppenheimer joined Silman in 1988 where he is now Executive Vice President. Nat develops engineering systems to support new construction, renovations, and historic preservation and is Principal in charge of much of the firm's institutional work. Recent projects include Grace Farms designed by SANAA in New Canaan, CT, the expansion and renovation of the Harvard Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, both designed by Renzo Piano. For Cornell University, Nat worked with OMA to engineer the Milstein Hall. Nat has dedicated nine years of his time and expertise to act as a structural consultant in the Totalization sequence. 

Aylin Nazli is a current Master of Architecture student. She received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015. She worked an intern architect at Cooper Carry in Atlanta for two years before attending Rice. She is currently the director and host of the Rice Architecture podcast Tête-à-Tête.
