Site Work / Work Site

"Site Work / Work Site" is a second year architecture studio that where students designed an oyster "aqua-cultural" center on Galveston Island’s West Bay - combining an oyster farm with a cultural and education center. Oyster aquaculture is a relatively new frontier for Texas, having only been legalized in 2019; but it is becoming more critical as wild oyster habitats are increasingly vulnerable to overfishing, flooding, drought, and other human and environmental impacts. Through engaging issues of site, landscape, and ecology, students explored how to design within a specific social, cultural, and environmental context.
