This course is comprised of multiple formal and informal modules each lasting 35 weeks, concurrently or sequentially. Through lectures, site visits, and walking tours topics ranging from reflections on architecture and urbanism in metropolitan Paris to an examination of how architectural modernism played itself out within the context of nineteenth and twentieth century Paris are introduced. Other issues include speculations on the changes brought to the architectural discipline by the rise of digital technologies and their challenge to structural ideals, as well as, an understanding of French culture and society focusing on questions of identity and diversity, institutions, the role of the state and the founding principles of the social and political system. Included is a module on conversational French. Required for RSAP students.
