The National Academy of Design in New York City has elected Professor Carlos Jiménez as a 2023 National Academician. With this honor, Jiménez joins over 2,400 notable artists and architects who have been elected since the founding of the organization in 1825. Being elected a National Academician acknowledges Jiménez as one of the leaders in architectural thought in the United States and as someone who both defines and challenges the very notions of architectural design today.
“An accomplished architect, thinker, and educator, Professor Carlos Jiménez is the most praiseworthy new member of the 2023 Academicians elected by the National Academy of Design,” said Igor Marjanović, the William Ward Watkin Dean of Rice Architecture. “We are so proud of his many accomplishments in Houston and further afield, both through his design work and the many collaborations, friendships, and alliances he champions around the globe.”
Jiménez and the other 2023 Academicians are invited to donate a work representative of their thought, scholarship, and practice to the National Academy of Design, which holds one of the world’s most robust collections of American art and architecture. The collection is almost entirely composed of work that is self-selected, ensuring that the artists’ and architects’ voices are entirely their own.
The induction of this year’s members follows the opening of the National Academy of Design’s new home in the Chelsea Arts District in New York.
