Rice Building Workshop was invited by the Hermann Park Conservancy to design and install a pavilion celebrating the Park’s centennial and long relationship to Rice. In the fall of 2013, RBW students developed schemes that eventually melded into CONVERGENCE, a work that marks a place in the territory between the University, the Medical Center, and the Museum District. The design, consisting of three steel frames, six concrete benches, and a scrim of cables, nestles into a triangle of trees, and invites passers-by to linger for a moment. Students, consultants, contractors, and volunteers worked together to fabricate and install the parts of the structure into a whole piece, in time for the Park’s Centennial Gala.
