Dean Sarah Whiting, Lecturer Stephen Fox, and Rice Architecture alumnus Charles Renfro fought to preserve the historic Shelor Building at 1621 Milam Street in downtown Houston. The building, an old automobile showroom and former home of The Houston Press, was one of the first of its kind to be constructed in Houston.

In the end, Chevron, the new owner of the lot and building, made the final decision to demolish the architectural treasure. Though the decision was a setback for the architectural community, preservationists are continuing to work as hard as possible towards gaining a wider influence and spreading awareness to Houstonians about how these demolitions will greatly change the urban landscape of their city.
