Workshop Houston began as the Third Ward Community Bike Shop in 2003 and continues as a lively outreach to Third Ward youth, combining hands-on bike repair and youth programming. In recent years, Workshop Houston (WH) programs have extended to numerous after-school and summer workshops and academic enrichment. To accommodate the expanded program, renovation and expansion of the current facility is required.
Over two semesters, RBW students developed an overall site strategy and a design in detail for Phase One implementation with complete systems, materials, and details. Adding on to the existing Chopper Shop (bicycle design and building), the plan includes the Style Shop (fashion and graphic design), the Beat Shop (writing and recording music), the Scholar Shop (tutoring and academic support), and staff offices.
The design concept takes into account the non-profit’s modest budget and the residential context around the buildings. Using simple and effective moves to create a campus feel for the Workshop Houston community, the covered exterior “scoopouts” are the main gathering spaces for informal groups and WH events. Clerestories bring light and ventilation into the interior spaces. All construction documents have been completed and permitted. Construction by a contractor will begin soon.
