How Much Land Does a Man Need?
In the context of Houston’s projected population growth and a need for more dense and sustainable residential developments, this design studio will tackle the development of a speculative approach to collective living. “How Much Land Does a Man Need?”—named after Leo Tolstoy’s remarkable short story from 1886—is a design and research project that will challenge the negative bias toward large-scale collective housing; reconsider the role of housing and domestic space; and propose alternatives to the ubiquitous single-family house by establishing new typologies for multi-unit housing.
