Surface Tension

This studio addresses water as a shared social space, working towards the design of a community public swimming pool hall in Houston. We will design relationships with water at different scales, from the space of the vessel and of swimming bodies, to its supporting programs and surrounding urban and ecological fabrics. Situated between program and context, surface and substrate, inside and outside, public and private, land and water, we will ask what spatial dispositions can be cultivated by framing, containing, draining and furnishing water with built form. Going beyond pure aquatic leisure, we will look at how architecture can elevate civic amenities, provide spaces of community, and engage nonhuman forms of life.
