William T. Cannady

Profile

Will Cannady has been a teacher at Rice University since 1964. On campus, he acts as Chairman, a member of the University Transportation and Parking Committee, and a member of the Rice Tennis Club. Will holds joint teaching assignments in the Jones Graduate School of Business and the George R. Brown School of Engineering in addition to serving as a visiting lecturer and critic at the many distinguished institutions. Cannady was one of three faculty members who founded the Rice Design Alliance. In 2000, the Rice Board of Trustees awarded him with a Meritorious Service Award for his service in leading major changes to campus planning and parking systems.

Cannady was awarded Educator of the Year Award from the Houston Chapter of the AIA in 2010. He is a past president and member of the Houston Philosophical Society, former member of the Advisory Board of Med Center Bank and Frost Bank in the Texas Medical Center. He served on the Real Estate and Master Site Plan committee of the Menil Collection. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for eight years and is an Eagle Scout.

In his architectural practice, Cannady has designed and built over two hundred projects. His firm’s work has been honored with sixty-five design awards and has been published in local, state, national and international periodicals and journals.

Cannady was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 1983 for his significant contributions to the profession in the areas of education and design.  

In 2021 Cannady was awarded the Meritorious Service award from the Association of Rice Alumni.
